Officers from the Nassau County Police Department were dispatched to Rite Aid on Merrick Road in Wantagh at approximately 7:23 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, where there were reports of a woman driving while intoxicated with a child inside her Honda Accord.

Using a description of the vehicle, officers located the driver - later identified as Amityville resident Margareth Mendoza, 36 - who was driving on Sunrise Highway.

Police said that the officers stopped her for a traffic violation, and during the investigation, Mendoza had glassy, bloodshot eyes, her speech was slurred and there was alcohol on her breath.

Further investigation found that Mendoza had left the scene of a crash with another driver, who was uninjured. At the time of the crash and traffic stop, Mendoza had her 4-month-old child in the backseat.

Mendoza was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law, endangering the welfare of a child and multiple traffic violations. She is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday, Oct. 4 at First District Court in Hempstead.
